The Great Allegheny Passage, is a 150‐mile system of biking and hiking trails that connects Cumberland, MD and Pittsburgh, PA. The connection to the C & O Canal Towpath in Cumberland, MD was made in 2006, creating a continuous non‐motorized corridor, 318 miles long, from McKeesport, near Pittsburgh, to Washington, DC.

This is a great video and this is a wonderful trail. It is terrific that so many of the bicycle riders are wearing helmets. I wish more of the riders were wearing helmets, however. We had a family member fall off his bicycle 3 years ago, and his helmet broke (along with his arm). Although knocked unconscious and hospitalized for 6 days, his scull did not break, and his life was saved by the helmet.
In the video, the scene of the person cycling (wearing a hat, not a helmet) with the infant in the baby carrier (not wearing helmet) is particularly disturbing.

Very, very nice video. We have ridden many portions of the Great Allegheny Passage and I can not say enough about its beauty and serenity. The video talks about the thousands who visit but the trail is not crowded with people! There is more of a feeling that you are alone in the wilderness once you are a couple miles beyond the access points.
I highly recommend a book by Bill Metzger entitled, The Great Allegheny Passage. It gives a mile by mile history beginning at McKeesport, PA. Do you know what a whistle post is? And did you know that brakemen had to climb on top of the train and hop from car to car and manually apply the brakes in order to stop the train? Yep, until George Westinghouse invented the air brake that’s how things worked. His invention saved countless lives.
